I was on my computer last night, doing assignments as I do, when I noticed someone had shared a video about Tony Abbott. Then I noticed someone else had shared it, then another, and another. My entire newsfeed was filled with this same video.
A satirical comedy show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, has turned its attention on Australia's Prime Minister, highlighting some of his most embarrassing moments. The segment is particularly brutal, bringing up most of the PM's scandals in recent years; from the silent treatment response to that the infamous wink. The video linked in the story has gone viral, and currently has over 223,000 views in the 23 hours that is has been up.
My Opinion
I must admit, I did have a giggle at this article and the video. However, it raises some issues of free speech. I am by no means an Abbott supporter, but when a nation's leader is ridiculed on another country's national TV it makes you think; is this man really suitable to lead our country?
Free speech is a beautiful thing. It allows the public to voice their real concerns and bring change. It is one thing for the citizens of a country to utilise their right of free speech against their leader, however it is a complete other level for another country to step in and voice such concerns. This paired with social media and how fast a video can spread online means Tony Abbott's approval rating is probably not going to increase any time soon.
They say all publicity is good publicity. Well, maybe not all publicity.
Do you think that Last Week Tonight went too far and disrespected our PM? Let me know in the comments
